There are many reasons to choose Mauritius.

Not only the sun and the sand, but also the people of Mauritius make it a fantastic place to live in.  A smiling face is always around the corner!  The food is fabulous, a mix between Indian, African, Asian and European, and the combination is explosive! And very healthy.

The schools in Mauritius are also extremely well renowned worldwide.

In Mauritius we speak 3 languages, English for business (it is the official language), French is the common every day language and Creole is the local dialect.

Although Mauritius seems to be far away, it is directly connected to all the major cities of Europe and Asia and Southern Africa.

The political and economical situation is stable and calm. Parliamentary democracy within the British Commonwealth.

Cost of living

Many people ask me how much it costs to live in Mauritius.  Well, it all depends on you and your way of living.  It also depends what you compare it to.  If you are coming from South Africa, you will find it all much more expensive, and if you are coming from Europe it will all be much cheaper.

After a year in Mauritius I have found my bearings quite quickly and I know now that it is cheaper to buy vegetables from the market rather than the super market, that the local food is a lot cheaper than the imported food and it is just as nice, and other things like that.

It is hard to tell you how much you will spend when you are living in Mauritius.  As a guideline, I have put together a list of living costs, according to my own experience and my family of 4. My kids are small, both under 3 years old.

We rent a house in the North of the island with 4 bedrooms, kitchen, living room, dining room,  garden, small pool.
Rent: will depend on the standards, but can go from 30.000 Rs to 150.000 Rs if you are on the beach.
Electricity: 4000 Rs (we find electricity quite expensive)
Water: 300 Rs
Internet connexion: 1500 Rs
Car insurance:  14000 Rs per year full coverage
Health insurance: 15000 Rs per year full coverage for the whole family
DSTV/Satellite TV: 2100 Rs per month for DSTV, Canal + is cheaper and has great programs in English too.
Shopping:
Vegetables at the market: 400 Rs for the week
Groceries at the local supermarket (a bit of meat, a little fish, milk, bread, water, etc for 1 week): approx 6000 Rs.
Clothing:
You have a lot of factory outlets with promotions on all sorts of clothes, if you are patient, you will find good bargains.  There are a lot of shops in Grand Bay and Port Louis with all sorts of clothes for all fashion styles.  The tricky part is to find the shop you like!

Maids, Cooks, Nannies:  4.500 Rs for a half day, every day including Saturdays.
